There are so many movies that absolutely just rip your heart out of your chest. Then there are movies that you wouldn’t even let your child watch 20-plus years later. One internet user asked an internet forum, “What’s the single saddest movie?” Here is what the popular internet community had to say.
1. The Fox and the Hound (1981)
One kid mentioned, “It’s a Disney cartoon, and so many of us said, I want to see the new Disney cartoon to our parents just to have our hearts crushed in the theater! At the most basic level, it is a story about friendship between beings that should not be friends.” A second person confessed, “I saw it when I was 18 years old. I sobbed my eyes out. I refused ever to watch another movie about animals. I’m 60 years old and still won’t; my heart can’t take it.”
2. Dacner in the Dark (2000)
“I sobbed for hours after watching Dancer in the Dark. Don’t know if I could watch it again. Bjork was just incredible. I know the filming of it and the behavior of the director Lars von Trier was terrible for her, and she stopped acting for years.” One film viewer continued, “I believe she’s starting to act again now. That film, more than any other, broke my heart.”
3. What Dreams May Come (1998)
A Robin Williams fan stated, “I watch this every time I need a good cry. I couldn’t bring myself to watch it for years after Robin passed, and when I did, I cried harder than ever before. It’s a beautiful movie but so heartbreaking.”
4. The Road (2009)
One father agreed, “Yes. I watched it a year before I had my twins, and it messed me up. I watched it again a year after and thought I was ready… but I wasn’t. It hits differently after you become a dad. I’m not an emotional person, and this movie tears me up. That’s why it’s my all-time favorite, and I’ve only been able to bring myself to watch it twice.”
5. Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is a janitor working in Boston who left his hometown to escape the pain and heartache that it has caused him. But when his older brother dies, Lee becomes the sole guardian of his nephew, and he is forced to return home to the place he has long left behind. Upon his return, Lee will have to finally face the music.
6. Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
Ben Sanderson (Nicolas Cage) is a screenwriter who has just lost everything; his wife, his family, everything! So he does the logical thing and loads enough alcohol in his BMW to poison an elephant, and it’s all for him. Ben plans to drink himself to death on the way to Vegas. When he arrives in Sin City, he meets a lady of the night, and they strike up a strange relationship that may have saved his life.
7. Steel Magnolias (1989)
Another film viewer shared, “I saw it while away at school. Later at my parent’s house, I told my family about it at dinner. Half laughing and crying, I told them I learned it was a formula movie. Couldn’t get over the fact they made movies like this on purpose!”
8. The Lovely Bones (2009)
Another film connoisseur rebuts, “My aunt took me to see this in theaters when I was 17. Long story short…We became theater buddies after she forced me to tag along for the Twilight movie release. Jump ahead a year to 2009; we went and saw The Lovely Bones. I’m 30 now, and I’m just realizing why we stopped seeing movies together…that was a BAD time. I should ask her if she wants to go back to the movies.”
9. Beaches (1988)
“My whole life, my mom talked about how much she loved this movie. Never knowing anything about it, I watched it the day after she died to feel close to her again. That was a HUGE MISTAKE. I haven’t watched it since,” another commenter stated.
10. Seven Pounds (2008)
Several respondents added, “I agree with you. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it. It’s about time to revisit it. When I saw it for the first time and started putting everything together and figuring out why he was doing what he was doing…..I was a mess.”
11. Sofie’s Choice (1982)
A heartbreaking story about an abused woman (Meryl Streep) in a horrifically violent relationship with a paranoid schizophrenic. Meryl Streep portrays a woman who is not only an immigrant but an Auschwitz survivor. The heartbreak of the story comes in when the story of her past is finally revealed.
12. Life is Beautiful (1997)
A final person exclaimed, “Oof…it’s a dad and son in a concentration camp. The dad tries his hardest to minimize the trauma to his kid, and there are some more entertaining parts, but it absolutely rips your soul out. It’s not a comedy or farce.”
