Which movies had the worst and dumbest premises that were not trying to be silly and stupid? Recently, an online entertainment forum discussed said films, and here are their nominees.
1. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
“More a plot point than a premise, but I will never be over ALL the cops in Gotham City being sent underground in The Dark Knight Rises. So cartoonishly outrageous. That movie was so dumb. The U.S. military wouldn’t immediately invade Gotham when Bane took it over.”
This one pains me because I absolutely love this movie. The Dark Knight is obviously the one that gets all of the glory, but I love Bane and the premise of The Dark Knight Rises.
2. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
“I don’t know about dumb, but Mrs. Doubtfire has a pretty weird and frankly creepy premise for such a ‘family classic’ type of movie. The idea any father would pretend to be someone else to spend time with his kids is a bit odd, let alone becoming an overweight older woman.”
Again, I understand the logistics of why the story is respected today. However, I grew up watching it and love every minute of it. “It was a run by fruiting!” It’s Robin Williams. What is not to love?
3. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
“The Day After Tomorrow. I think that movie has actually set back climate change activism. Everyone who doesn’t think climate change is real watches that movie and sees all the SciFi hogwash, and it reaffirms their belief. Like, ‘That will never happen.’ And they’re not wrong. Climate change is real, but it won’t happen like that.”
4. The Purge (2013)
“The Purge is just too ridiculous for me to suspend my disbelief for any amount of time. So they’re telling me that criminals just…abide by the rules 364 days a year as long as they are given a single day to do whatever they want?”
5. John Wick (2014)
“John Wick. Last night I took my wife to see part 4. It’s her first John Wick movie. I explained what started it, and after I told her it was about an ex-assassin whose wife died, he sent him a puppy, then some thugs killed his puppy. He went on a killing spree to kill the son of a mobster that killed his puppy.”
Admittedly, I don’t understand the hype of these films either, but my husband loves them. He described them as: “Ballet with guns,” and that resonated with me. So I can see why some people enjoy it, but the puppy part destroyed me.
6. The Happening (2008)
“The Happening, end of discussion.” OK. This movie was so stupid. I watched it and could not believe how bad it was. M. Night Shyamalan has some stinkers, but woo. However, on a second watch, without expectations, I found some entertainment to it. Enough to warrant a third watch even. Don’t ask me why.
7. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
“In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, they keep pushing the plot that villainous millionaires are trying to weaponize dinosaurs. At one point, someone says about raptors something like, ‘If we only had these in Afghanistan.’ Then what? You’d have been murdered by raptors in Afghanistan?
Wouldn’t you just spend these billions on more bombs, heavy armor, drones, etc? The insanity reaches a fever pitch when a gun is revealed that, when pointed at a target, doesn’t just shoot the target but tags the target for a genetically engineered Dino to attack.”
8. Teen Wolf Too (1987)
“Teen Wolf Too. Teen Wolf is a dumb but passible premise, but then extending it to college 1-on-1 boxing is just insane. Nobody would box a werewolf for college sports.”
9. Tusk (2014)
“Tusk has a pretty dumb premise: an old guy captures a man, performs surgeries on him, gradually morphing him into a walrus to relive his friendship with a walrus in his youth. I watched it twice and am really not sure where the lines between comedy, camp, and body horror fall. It’s an absolutely absurd film.”
10. Looper (2012)
“Looper. Time travel exists and is criminalized. Criminals still use it, though, but mostly to dispose of bodies and pretty much nothing else. God, I hate this movie. It’s just trash writing.”
“I didn’t hate it, but it was a load of nonsense, agreed! Whenever a movie knows it is stupid but wants you to ignore the fact, I always reference Looper and the Bruce Willis diner scene where he outright says, ‘Look, I know this makes no sense, but just roll with it and don’t ask questions.'”
11. Face/Off (1997)
“Face Off. The guy arrives home to his wife, and not only does the other guy’s face manage to fit on his, but she doesn’t notice him having an entirely different body, mannerisms, voice, or behavior.”
Hey buddy, they changed his voice too. Get it straight, haha! I’m sorry, but stupid premise or not, I absolutely love this movie. “You want to take his face… off…? No more drugs for this man!”
12. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
“The story of Catch Me If You Can is indicated to be a complete lie. So you pretty much watched a movie about a liar who lied about their life. If you’ve seen and loved the movie, you were tricked into believing these things happened.” Frank Abagnale Jr.’s biggest con!
