12 Plot Points That Popular Movies Didn’t Bother Resolving for Audiences

Do any of your favorite films have plot holes that were never resolved? You’re not alone. An entertainment community poster asked for examples of said plot holes. Here is what the forum volunteered. Did you notice?

1. Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

OK. I’m curious if Star Wars fans agree on the popularity of this episode, but Finn had something vital to tell Rey in The Rise of Skywalker. J.J. Abrams has since clarified that Finn wanted to tell Rey he was Force-sensitive.

2. The Dark Knight (2008)

In The Dark Knight, Joker crashes the fundraiser party with the wealthiest people in Gotham to get to Harvey Dent, holding everyone hostage. One avid film fan points out, “Batman dumps Dent into the panic room, but Joker throws Rachel out the window, and Batman leaps to save her.

Cut to the next day. Joker was still holding all the richest people in Gotham, hostage —did nothing happen there? Did Joker leave them alone? I guess so, but that doesn’t seem right.

3. Jurassic Park (1993)

In Jurassic Park —Hammond states at the visitor’s center that all the dinosaurs on the island have imprinted on him, which is possible since there is supposedly no breeding in the wild. “This never comes up again,” one notes.

“There is no scene where Hammond meets a dinosaur that treats him as its mother or any scene where he expects a dinosaur to do that and then gets surprised when it doesn’t. If you cut out the line about imprinting, the rest of the movie would still play out the same, and the viewer would never be like, “Wait, why wasn’t this set up earlier?”

4. Jurassic Park (1993)

Wait? Did you think we were done? We also never learn why the triceratops was sick in Jurassic Park. A dino fan explains, “Dr. Grant picks up some rocks and notices toxic plants nearby, but a ranger says the dinosaurs don’t eat them.

They never resolve the mystery. However, the novel explains it. The larger dinosaurs consume rocks to help them physically digest their food. Some rocks had leaves on them from the poisonous plants.”

5. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

OK. Other films are coming, but The Lost World: Jurassic Park was not without its own plot hole. How did the adult T-Rex kill the ship crew that captured him? “There’s no actual answer to this,” a moviegoer writes.

“One of the common explanations that gets spread around is that there was a deleted scene with raptors on the ship, but there’s no evidence whatsoever that it was ever filmed or even written into the script at any point.”

6. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

What happened to all the kids in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory? We see Augustus Gloop sucked into the chocolate river, Veruca Salt falls down a trash shoot, Violet Beauregarde becomes a giant blueberry, and Mike Teevee is shrunken to three inches.

While the original movie never details what happened to these four spoiled children, the novel (and Johnny Depp remake) reveals they survive but are altered permanently. Charlie sees them all outside.

7. Lady in White (1988)

Lady in White begins with a grown man getting off a plane and going to a cemetery. A user points out, “A guy asks him if he really believes the stories he writes, and we get a close-up of his eyes and a cut where the actual story begins.

No reason to include him at the start, and it never circles back at the end to explain at the end of the movie. You can infer that the adult is the kid in the story, so maybe it’s not as scary when the kid is put in danger.”

8. Michael Clayton (2007)

In Michael Clayton, audiences never learn if U-North settled with the victims or if they took it to trial because their General Counsel and CEO got arrested. ” I love that movie but am curious as to how they would have untangled that mess after the movie ends.”

9. Barbie (2023)

Spoiler alert for Barbie: One filmgoer asks, “Where do the Kens live in Barbie? It’s brought up that Barbie has no clue where they live, and when the Barbies take back the houses, the Kens just revert back to being homeless second-class citizens?”

10. The Karate Kid Part II (1986)

In The Karate Kid Part II, fans discover that Daniel is no longer with Ali, but there isn’t much to the story. Then he suddenly has a love interest in Japan. People believe that is a massive plot hole between movies one and two. Cobra Kai fans do mention it is addressed in the show.

11. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

In It’s a Wonderful Life, the evil Mr. Potter swipes $8000 from Bailey Brothers, hoping it will force them to shut down. Everyone in Bedford Falls rallies to save Bailey Brothers, but Mr. Potter still gets to keep the $8000.

A user adds, “And they net way more than $8,000 from the townspeople, and it’s just dismissed. Like Sam Wainwright’s cable/line of credit is more than enough to handle it alone, so shouldn’t they give these people back all their money?”

12. Cinderella (1950)

After Cinderella’s fairy Godmother grants her a special night, she clarifies that once the clock strikes midnight, all the magic will wear off, and the items will return to their natural states. If that’s true, then how did the slipper get left behind for the Prince to find? Shouldn’t it have been whatever it was before being transformed into the glass slippers?
