Have you ever had a commercial completely ruin a classic song for you? You’ve got company. Recently, someone polled an online music forum for examples of said songs. Here are their confessions. Do you agree?
1. Bob Seger — Like a Rock
The Chevy truck commercial destroyed Bob Seger’s “Like a Rock” for many classic rock fans in the forum. However, one notes, “I read that Seger was all in on that one. He wanted to help the auto workers in his hometown of Detroit.” While people acknowledge the good deed, they still no longer appreciate the song.
2. Steppenwolf — Born to Be Wild
While one user shares that the Pampers (diapers) commercial made “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf intolerable to his ears, another argues the Power Wheels motorcycles commercial ruined the song for them. That song has been in far too many commercials, including the Visit California and Diet Pepsi advertisements.
3. Iggy Pop — Lust for Life
“Lust for Life” for a cruise line while Iggy is still alive. I was, and remain, shocked,” complains one. That cruise line is the Royal Caribbean. Several people suggest the song does not match the vibe of what it’s advertising.
4. The Beach Boys — Good Vibrations
“Good Vibrations” by The Beach Boys was butchered in various ways in the Sunkist commercials of 1979 and 1980. Someone clarifies, “I’m picking up good vibrations, Sunkist Orange taste sensation. And it’s been over 40 years! Damn them.”
5. Blondie — One Way or Another
“One Way Or Another” by Blondie has been used in many commercials, including Heinz Ketchup and Coca-Cola. However, it’s the Swiffer commercial that has this forum in an uproar.
6. Pilot — It’s Magic
How is this one not number one? Ozempic for sure ruined “It’s Magic” by Pilot. One person admits, “Totally. Now when I hear the actual song, I hear myself going, “O-O-O-OZEMPIC!” Great. Just great.” A second user adds, “The drug company should be held liable for that. They are trying to make diabetes fun and cool, and it’s just wrong.”
7. Foreigner — Double Vision
Numerous individuals suggest that Burger King has destroyed far too many songs to count. However, one believes “Double Vision” by Foreigner was “Killed by BK!”
8. The Cars — Just What I Needed
“Just What I Needed” by The Cars was annihilated by Circuit City advertisements for many in this thread. I totally forgot about Circuit City, but I immediately flashed back to the commercial upon reading this.
9. Led Zeppelin — Rock and Roll
In 2001, “Rock and Roll” became the first Led Zeppelin song to be licensed for commercial use when Cadillac featured it in television advertising. Many admit they’ve not listened to the song since.
10. Credence Clearwater Survival — Fortunate Son
Multiple users agree with one who states, Those old Wrangler ads that used CCR’s ‘Fortunate Son’ but only played the lyrics, ‘Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, they’re red, white and blue,’ totally missing the point as they plugged their ‘American’ jeans.”
