Is laundry a never-ending mountain of mess in your home? Do you have a designated laundry couch, chair, or table? It piles up between having a fashionista teenager and a toddler who can’t decide between being a princess or a superhero! I know that I am not the only one who despises doing laundry. So, here are a few tips for fellow laundry haters.
1. Change Clothes Immediately Upon Returning Home
Do you remember having “school clothes” growing up? I remember the first thing we did when we got home was change out of our school clothes so they would last longer. Treat your work attire similarly and hang them up when you get home.
2. Wear Garments More Than Once
There is no need to wash every item of clothing after you wear it. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s just something detergent companies came up with to take your hard-earned dollars. It’s okay to wear a garment more than once. However, for hygiene purposes, underwear and socks need to be washed after every use.
3. Don’t Buy Clothes With Complex Cleaning Instructions
One of the easiest ways to make laundry less intrusive is to buy clothing with simple wash and care instructions. Having garments that are dry cleaned or hand washed only complicates the chore. Line dry only? Forget about it! Stick to machine wash and tumble dry.
4. Complete One Load Each Day
One of the quickest ways to eliminate Mount Impossible is to do a small load of laundry daily. This practice prevents it from piling up and becoming your entire weekend activity.
5. Put Clothes Away Immediately After Removing From the Dryer
Put your clothes away immediately after removing them from the dryer. Don’t set that hamper in a corner to live out of next week. All of your clothing will wrinkle and begin to form a stale smell. Avoid allowing them to pile up on furniture or the floor. This practice often creates more laundry because you’re constantly questioning whether the laundry is clean or dirty.
6. Shower Before Bed
Many Asian homes practice showering before bed to ensure washing off the day’s germs before entering the sheets. My mother (Korean) was big on showering before bed to “get off the day’s stink.” It’s funny because I laughed at her, but it does create time between laundering bedding. Showering before bed not only allows you a couple of weeks between washes versus the usual one but also helps you sleep better.
7. Wear Merino Wool Clothing
Embrace a life of sustainability by adding Merino wool clothing to your closet. Merino wool doesn’t need washing as frequently as other materials. Wooland suggests there’s no need to wash an entire garment when only the pits smell. Wetting the armpits of your wool garment and hanging it to dry overnight will reduce or eliminate the odor.
8. Freeze Favorite Garments Instead in Between Washes
Putting clothing in the freezer can kill bacteria and odors. Wrap up your favorite sweater or pair of jeans in a freezer bag and stick them in the freezer overnight. This tip is also useful to help prevent jeans from fading.
9. Stop Separating Laundry
Hear me out: wash your clothes in cold water, and there isn’t as much need to separate them. If you have a lot of white clothing, maybe this tip isn’t for you, but I’ve lived in black for decades. You don’t need to wash clothing in hot water. The only time I seperate is on the first wash of anything red or blue jeans.
10. Use Laundry Bags for Socks
Use netted garment bags to wash socks. It makes it one hundred times easier to match and put away when they aren’t loosely about in the wash. Take it a step further and get the family matching socks so every pair matches beautifully.
