I love movies that provide quotes for me and my wife to make each other laugh. One of our favorites is Stepbrothers, and I think we know every word of it. After someone asked an online entertainment forum what the most quotable films are. Here are their top responses. Do you agree?
1. The Princess Bride (1987)
Full of joyous, unblushing originality, The Princess Bride is loved by many and regularly quoted by many more. Many noted, “It’s quotable because it is memorable, but also these lines somehow find ways to come up in normal conversation where it just triggers a reaction.”
2. Airplane! (1980)
One Airplane! lover recalls one experience on a flight, “Once I was on a flight, and as I walked past first class, I saw Kareem Abdul Jabar, and I practically had to stuff my fists into my mouth to stop myself quoting Airplane! at him.” Others agreed that any time this film is shown, there need to be pop-up bubbles with pop culture information of the time, like the old VH1 Pop-Up Video.
3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
“The ‘I fart in your general direction’ had me rolling,” one Monty Python fan admires. “As silly as it was, I just loved the idea of farting towards you as an insult.” Albeit very childish and rudimentary, a good fart joke still gets me every now and then, so I will admit I gave it a little chuckle myself.
4. Mean Girls (2004)
“She doesn’t even go here!” Several commenters quoted the cafeteria scene where Amanda Seyfried’s character questions Lindsay Lohan’s character, “So if you’re from Africa, why are you white?” That’s so fetch!
5. Office Space (1999)
I just recently rewatched Office Space for the first time in a long time, and all parts of this movie remind me of why I happily fired my boss! “This. A large part because of all the amazing quotes that can apply to a ton of situations, but also because it is such a relatable movie.” Another commenter quotes, “I wouldn’t say I have been missing work.”
6. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
I absolutely love the works of Will Ferrell, and Anchorman is definitely top ten on my list of great Ferrell films. A fellow comedy fan shared, “I was like 11 when that movie came out, and probably for a whole year, my friends and I talked almost exclusively in Anchorman quotes.”
7. Pulp Fiction (1994)
Everyone was quick to quote Sam Jackson’s storied monologue in the apartment before finishing a mission. One commenter said their professor quoted the monologue quite often during class, and another shared the riveting speech as a final presentation in their public speaking class.
8. Forrest Gump (1994)
“That movie REALLY made me cry,” many critics admitted. “My oldest best friend went through the same thing Jenny did, and I cried for her, thinking of my friend. My friend is still alive and hasn’t done drugs, and I hope they never do. Such a sad movie.”
9. Dumb and Dumber (1994)
“A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Assssssspen.” Another film fan stated, “I’m surprised this didn’t get more votes. I can go through a day by responding to everyone with a Dumb and Dumber quote.”
10. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
This film is definitely a great one to watch if you have never seen it, But for those out there who haven’t seen it, the memorable quotes will most likely go over most people’s heads. A contributor concurs, “I quote this movie so much, but often people don’t know the reference.”
11. Young Frankenstein (1974)
A respected medical lecturer inherits his great-uncle’s estate in Transylvania, but soon after arriving, the doctor begins to take up his uncle’s old experiments. The craziest thing about his story is the fact that his last name is clearly FRANKENSTEIN but pronounces FRONKENSTEIN.
12. Caddyshack (1980)
Caddyshack is one of the more famous comedies from the 80s. Several film buffs noted, “There’s an old Saturday Night Live skit with Bill Murray and Chevy Chase done as an infomercial for the book The Quotable Caddyshack, marketed to guys who don’t have Caddyshack quotes memorized.”
13. Casablanca (1942)
“I had to scroll way too far to find this, a large group exclaimed. “Even the throwaway lines in Casablanca would be standouts in other movies.” Many noted how they recently watched Casablanca and thought much of the film was pretty cliché until they realized the cliché most likely came from this film itself!
14. Life of Brian (1979)
“My favorite thing is that they had to go back to the studio and ask for more money because the director blew through the budget with a musical extravaganza,” a Monty Python lover declares.
15. Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
“There are a lot of quotable movies with a preponderance of memorable quotes,” another cinephile denotes. “But when some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the bathroom wall, looks you crooked in the eye, and asks you if you paid your dues. You just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like that, ‘Have you paid your dues, Jack?’ ‘Yes, sir, the check is in the mail.’”
