Are you searching for some oldie-but-goodie comedies to have a good laugh? Then, we got you covered. After someone polled an entertainment forum asking for the funniest films of the last 60 years, here are their top-voted picks.
1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
One Monty Python lifer recalls, “I actually didn’t know anything about Monty Python at the time the movie first came out. I went to the theater to see Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother, and Holy Grail was showing as part of a double feature. I started laughing during the opening credits and couldn’t stop. It started a lifelong obsession with everything Python.”
2. Young Frankenstein (1974)
Dr. Fredrick Frankenstein inherited a Transylvania estate from his super infamous great-grandfather. When Fredrick arrives at the spooky, eerie castle-like structure, he begins to recreate some of his great-grandfather’s old experiments. Many of the props used in this film were original props from the 1931 film. Don’t forget that it’s not pronounced Frankenstein; it’s Fronkensteen!
3. Office Space (1999)
“It’s so good, but I wonder if it hits the same if you have never had to work in an office environment,” one filmaholic questions. “Even if your office job is not terrible, there are some things you feel in your soul, like birthday cakes. I guess if you grew up in the suburbs with the dream to escape or worked at a corporate chain restaurant, you could relate.”
4. Raising Arizona (1987)
Raising Arizona is a flick that stars Nic Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, Frances McDormand, and Randall “Tex” Cobb. Cage plays an ex-con fighting recidivism, and Hunter plays his wife, who is also a former police officer.
They come together in love, hoping to bring life into this world, when they find out she is infertile. Their resolution to the issue is to kidnap one baby out of a group of quintuplets. But things don’t go nearly as planned, with a bunch of mishaps and a lot of unwanted guests.
5. The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)
This story follows a Bushman of the San people from South Africa on a pilgrimage to return a decisive gift to the Gods from which they believe it came. The truth of the matter is the San people have been isolated from industrial civilization, and their gift is truly a glass Coca-Cola bottle thrown out of an airplane from above.
On his trip to return this unwanted gift, he meets a manure-studying biologist, a journalist-turned-village school teacher from Jo Burg, and a band of Guerilla terrorists. And that’s just the beginning.
6. This is Spinal Tap (1984)
One moviegoer recalls their viewing, “I bought a ticket thinking this was a documentary about an unknown band. I knew immediately when I saw Rob Reiner and Michael McKean that it wasn’t a real band; Immediate disappointment. Two minutes later, my buddy Dave and I are rolling on the floor. The five other people in the theater got up and left 30 minutes in. They didn’t get it.”
7. The Jerk (1979)
Navin Johnson (Steve Martin) was adopted by poor black sharecroppers and spent his whole life into adulthood, not knowing that he was, in fact, adopted. One day he embarks on a trip to St Louis in search of the origins of a Champagne-style song he heard on the radio.
On his trip, he adopts a dog, helps an inventor, makes millions of dollars, loses it all, and then gains it back in a weird way. He even got married! The movie is full of laughs and good times.
8. It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
“Knowing how famous all the cast was before they all worked together makes it fun for me to watch.” Another film fan admits, “I loved this movie in my 20s. The final banana peel scene is the perfect blend of emotion (regret) and slapstick. Laughter is the best medicine, and seeing an original Karen’s karma is so satisfying!”
9. Trading Places (1983)
“Probably, I would have to say Trading Places starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd.” One admitted, “Maybe it has one of the funniest scenes in a movie I have ever seen. There is a certain point when a character named Rufus (played by Chris Rock) falls naked from the sky.”
10. The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976)
Several critics mention The Pink Panther Strikes Again with Peter Sellers. The film’s most notable scene is the one with the dog. Sellers’ character is standing in front of a dog, and he asks Graham Stark’s character if the dog bites.
He ensures Sellers that HIS dog doesn’t bite. After the dog does, in fact, bite him, Sellers says, “I thought you said your dog didn’t bite?” and Graham rebuts, “THAT is not my dog!”
11. The Blues Brothers (1980)
This feature was jam-packed with talent and big named stars. Many recount Ray Charles’ portrayal of the blind pawn shop owner. Most notably out of “So many great moments, like when the band has to vamp at the final concert, and suddenly they are all in tuxedos and staged like a famous Big Band, but at the end of the song they are all back in jeans.”
12. Midnight Run (1988)
As a feature flick, Midnight Run was just so well done. So much so that even those who aren’t De Niro fans (I have no clue how) have to like it. One De Niro disapproved divulges, “I saw that movie accidentally. And I am not a De Niro fan, to put it mildly. But that movie was just so well done. It was perfectly timed, balanced, and scripted, and shot . . . everything.”
