On October 28, 2023, the world learned we had lost our beloved Matthew Perry. While starring in hit films, including Fools Rush In and The Whole Nine Yards, he was best known for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends.
For many of us, Chandler Bing has become a household name. For some, he felt like a real friend. It’s been my comfort show for two decades. Losing him, I know watching it will always be bittersweet moving forward. Still, here are 15 of Chandler Bing’s most lovable moments. Could he BE any more endearing?
1. The One With Frank Jr.
Joey making the oversized entertainment center resulted in this drilling scene where Chandler comes out of the room. Joey states: “Oh, sorry. Did I get ya?” he hysterically replies, “No, you didn’t get me! It’s an electric drill! You get me. You kill me!” Matthew Perry had a hilarious line delivery.
2. The One With the Cuffs
Rachel walking into her boss Joana’s office to discover Chandler handcuffed to the chair is hilarious. Chandler explains: “Okay, here’s the situation. The keys to the cuffs are on the back of the door. Could you be a doll and grab them and scoot on over and unlock me? And on a totally different subject, that is a lovely pantsuit.” Classic Bing.
3. The One After the Superbowl: Part 2
One of my personal favorite storylines is when Chandler starts dating “Susie Underpants” (Julia Roberts). She tricks him into flossing and removing his clothes in the bathroom of a fancy restaurant. From her taking the clothes as petty revenge for showing the school her underpants as kids to him walking out of the establishment with nothing but the bathroom stall door — it’s side-splitting.
4. The One With the Embryos
“Actually, it’s Miss Chanandler Bong!” Easily one of the best episodes of the entire series, “The One With the Embryos,” the women risk losing their apartment in a trivia game Ross creates. The ladies lose the game after they can’t answer: “What is Chandler Bing’s job?” Matthew Perry shines in this episode — “I can’t believe we live here!”
5. The One Where Everybody Finds Out
The entire interchange between Chandler and Phoebe in “The One Where Everybody Finds Out” is one of the best moments in the series. Phoebe finally finds out that Chandler and Monica are “doing it.” So she and Rachel plot ways to mess with them.
It goes back and forth until Phoebe ends up at Chandler’s apartment. Hearing him say: “Because I’m in love with Monica,” is a heart-melting scene. “And hats off to Phoebe. Quite a competitor. And might I say your breasts are still showing?”
6. The One With the Metaphorical Tunnel
“Oh, no, no, no, don’t go! I’ve scared ya’! I’ve said too much! I’m hopeless and awkward and desperate for love!” When Chandler offers Janice a drawer, she panics because she’s not divorced yet.
From Chandler following Janice to the grocery store and yielding advice from Monica and Rachel, this episode has many funny moments. “Hey, Janice! It’s me. Um, yeah, I-I-I just wanna apologize in advance for having chased you down the street.”
7. The One With the Giant Poking Device
In “The One With the Giant Poking Device,” Chandler is devastated to learn that Joey witnessed Janice kissing her ex-husband. After heeding Joey’s advice about bowing out because they have a kid together, he wouldn’t want to be the guy to ruin the chance of them working out. He delivers a vulnerable rendition of “Endless Love.” — “Then don’t leave me! Forget what I said. I was babbling! Pick me!”
8. The One Where Heckles Dies
“Whoa! Don’t know about that.” After Mr. Heckles dies, Chandler panics when he uncovers a yearbook and some pictures that suggest he is on the same lonely path as Heckles, which terrifies him. “Our trains are on the same track, OK? Yeah, sure, I’m coming up 30 years behind him, but the stops are all the same. Bitter Town. Aloneville. Hermit Junction.”
9. The One With All the Cheesecakes
The episode where Chandler and Rachel are stealing cheesecakes is priceless. “I will give you a hundred dollars to whistle right now.” After Chandler finds Rachel eating the cheesecake without him, he decides he can’t trust her, and they will split it so they can each have their own piece.
“Oh-ho-ho-ho-no! No! No switching! No sharing, and don’t come crying to me! Ha-ha-ha! I may just sit here and have my cake all day! Just sit here in the hallway and eat my…” It results in them eating the cheesecake off the floor in the hallway.
10. The One With the Hypnosis Tape
“Y’know, I forgot the combination to this about a year ago? I just carry it around. Do you have any Chap Stick?” One of the funniest Chandler storylines is when he uses a hypnosis tape to quit smoking. The catch? It is subliminally encouraging him as a strong and confident woman. So, he begins to develop some effeminate traits.
Ultimately, Joey discovers this and alters the tape: “Joey’s your best friend. You want to make him a cheese sandwich every day. And you also want to buy him hundreds of dollars worth of pants.”
11. The One With Chandler in a Box
“You can’t tell, but I’m trying to break the tension by mooning you guys!” Chandler in the box resulted from him kissing Joey’s girlfriend, Kathy. To prove how sorry he is, he agrees to stay in the box and think about how he let Joey down.
The same way Joey did when he was locked in the oversized entertainment cabinet. When Kathy breaks up with Chandler, and he doesn’t say a single word to prove how sorry he is and how much he wants to remain friends with Joey, it melted hearts.
12. The One Where Chandler Can’t Remember Which Sister
After getting wasted at Joey’s birthday party, Chandler kisses one of his sisters and doesn’t know how to tell him. “Well, that’s the part where you tell him that I moved to France. When actually I’ll be in Cuba.”
Joey finds out, and Chandler goes along with really liking her to avoid fighting. But he doesn’t know which one! It results in Joey’s sister, Cookie, punching Chandler in the face after Joey gives the go-ahead.
13. The One With Phoebe’s Ex-partner
“Oh God, it freaked me out. Okay, I know it shouldn’t have, but it did. I mean, I like her, I don’t want to stop seeing her, but every so often, it’s like, ‘Hey, y’know what, where’s your leg?’ I mean, I’m the smallest person in the world, aren’t I? I’m the smallest person in the world.”
Chandler is hilarious in this episode, where he dates a girl with a wooden leg! What’s worse? Joey had dated her, accidentally tossed her leg on the fire, and left her in the middle of the night. Finally, she ironically breaks up when she discovers his “nubbin” or ” third nipple kinda thing.”
14. The One With All the Rugby
“I’m only going to pretend I’m moving to Yemen. It’s the only way I can get rid of her.” When Chandler can’t break up with Janice, he creates an elaborate lie about moving to Yemen because of work. The lie evolves into him actually having to buy a ticket.
However, he attempts to get off the plane, and Janice spots him. He plays it off as needing one last kiss before announcing: “Well, then, I guess I’m going to Yemen! I’m going to Yemen!”
15. The One Where Dr. Ramoray Dies
“Well, that’s not an — even a real fish. No, that’s a goldfish cracker.” My favorite early storyline is the three-episode arc where Chandler gets a new roommate, Eddie (Adam Goldberg). The guy has a few loose marbles, giving Chandler several memorable joke setups and quotable lines. “The One Where Eddie Won’t Go” is equally hilarious. “Hannibal Lecter…better roommate than you.”
Matthew Perry truly shined as the lovable Chandler Bing, and he will be sorely missed.
