Why do people judge others for having fun and enjoying things in life? I’m unsure, but they do. After someone polled a popular entertainment community about what hobbies they judge others for indulging in (or that they are judged for), here are their confessions.
1. Hunting
One user admits, “Hunting. This is what I don’t understand. Hunting gets so much flack from people who don’t understand it and say hunting for food is fine, but sport is not. However, except for varmints, it’s pretty much universally illegal to shoot a game animal and not use the meat. That is called wanton waste.”
2. Martial Arts
One suggests, “There’s a certain age where being a beginner in a martial art goes from cool to uncool. Then if you become good at it, it becomes cool again at any age. And the real kicker (pun not intended) is that it’s legitimately harder to find martial arts classes that aren’t specifically for kids.”
3. Raising Horses
A woman explains, “I work hard for my horses. I’ve been working hard to pay for them for 20 years. It’s not my parent’s money. It’s mine. I can prioritize people I love over horses. They’re important to me but do not always come first. Yes, it’s expensive, but I am passionate about it, and I have one life to live, so I might as well do it before I settle down and may have to step back to raise a family.”
4. Fishing
“Fishing and boats get treated as this redneck hobby for conservatives when literally every poor coastal culture does it, and probably more than white people in the states. Some of my most cherished memories with my dad are fishing on his boat. I’m fully Hispanic,” admits one avid fisherman.
5. Skateboarding
“Skateboarding,” says one. “People think you’re some kind of no-good trouble maker, especially the cops.” Another argues, “Could probably say the same thing about rollerblading, and even skaters hate them.” The irony.
6. Live Action Role Play
Live Action Role Play, or LARPing, is when participants physically portray characters and act out in live-action play. The players work toward goals within a fictional setting represented by real-world environments while their characters interact.
7. Video Games
While the last ten years of gaming have embraced a more mainstream inclusion, many people do not respect video games as a viable hobby. Gamers are often judged by those who regurgitate what they’ve heard about video games and the people who play them.
8. Taxidermy
Taxidermy is the “art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of animals, especially vertebrates.” Many people judge it as strange. Additionally, animal rights activists are against it and, according to some taxidermists in the thread, “make trouble” for those who enjoy the hobby.
9. Furries
Furries are people who are interested in anthropomorphic or cartoon animals. They strongly identify with them, creating fursonas or their identities as anthropomorphic animals.
10. Card and Figurine Collectors
Card and figurine collectors are often judged as having a strange hobby because many others don’t understand it. However, for those who indulge in their fandoms, it’s exciting.
11. Thrift Shopping
Thrift shopping is getting some heat because some people buy and resell their finds for profit. However, many drew attention to the fact that thrift stores operate by selling donations for profit. So they don’t see a need to judge the hobby or side business.
12. Target Shooting
Several shooting enthusiasts say their hobby is judged harshly because it involves guns. One elaborates that if you own multiple weapons, “you’re deemed a gun nut.” However, they explain going to the range and hitting the target you’re aiming at creates a stress relief that “modern chemistry can’t mimic.”
13. Pole Dancing
Pole Dancing is a hobby that more and more people are embracing as a form of exercise. However, due to the sexy dancing and connotation with exotic dancers, the hobby is judged.
14. Dumpster Diving
Regarding dumpster diving, several hobbyists explain there is no need for people to judge others for repurposing trash. However, others argue that they often leave messes by ripping bags apart and not picking up after themselves after tossing things out of the dumpster.
15. Comic Book Collecting
Comic book collecting and reading made this list of hobbies people judge negatively. It’s strange, considering how many of them they continue to turn into well-received movies. And some are not well-received too. Nonetheless, comic books are cool, and the artwork is dope. So stop hating!
