What’s the first mind-blowing movie you have ever seen? What’s your favorite thought-provoking film of all time? My favorite mind-bending film of all time is either Inception or The Mist. After someone asked for other examples in an online film forum, here is what moviegoers had to say.

1. The Prestige (2006)

Set in Edwardian London, this period thriller piece illustrates the strife between two former magician partners who split in the wake of the death of an assistant during a performance. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johannson, and David Bowie.

2. Inception (2010)

Inception is a film that dives into the reality of thought processes. The main character Cobb, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is a professional thief who infiltrates his target’s minds to steal their most precious inner thoughts for the gain of a third party. Unfortunately, he has been on the run, away from his family and home, but he is offered an opportunity to make it right by completing an impossible task. Without leaving a trace, he must plant a thought in a person’s head.

3. Midsommar (2019)

A dysfunctional couple on the verge of a split, and some friends find themselves invited to a midsummer festival in Sweden. But only after they arrive at the festival and things begin to get weird do the friends realize that they are in the midst of a ritualistic cult and are part of the ritual.

4. Diabolique (1996)

Diabolique is an oldie from France that you might be able to track down. It’s a classic. A woman and her husband’s mistress plot together and kill the guy. Then the wife starts getting hints that he’s still alive. This movie is definitely a weird one, with a twist ending, but it is well worth finding.

5. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Based on the 1978 novel of the same name written by Hubert Selby Jr., who also co-wrote the screenplay, this film follows four individuals struggling with addiction. It depicts the ups and downs as well as the toll addiction has on your mental and emotional state. The film stars Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans, Jennifer Connelly, Ellen Burstyn, and Christopher McDonald.

6. The Little Things (2021)

Following a pair of detectives whose paths cross in pursuit of what appears to be a serial murderer in California during the 90s. Rami Malek plays the current lead detective on a new murder in L.A. that matches the M.O. of a previous series of unsolved murders. Denzel Washington plays the detective who was driven to divorce and has a heart attack over what they believe is the same perp.

7. Prisoners (2013)

The movie Prisoners depicts the abduction of two young girls and the subsequent search for their abductor led by the local police and one of the missing girls’ fathers (Hugh Jackman). Once the police make an arrest but eventually release who the father suspects is the person responsible, Hugh Jackman’s character takes matters into his own hands.

8. The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

A supernatural mystery that claims to be based on the events that took place between November 1966 and December 1967 in Point Pleasant, Pa. The plot follows Richard Gere, a Washington Post Columnist, in search of the Mothman legend following the unexpected death of his wife due to glioblastoma.

9. Jacob’s Ladder (1990)

Jacob Singer, a recently returned Vietnam vet, has been experiencing incoherent visions and insane hallucinations due to his time in the Army as an infantryman. As his situation and hallucinations worsen, Jacob struggles to find an answer to what he is going through.

A young woman and her husband have their peaceful and tranquil existence upended when a slew of uninvited guests show up and tear down the young woman’s understanding of what home is. This psychological horror features Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Kristen Wiig.

11. Split (2016)

M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 psychological thriller is about Kevin (James Macavoy), who struggles with dissociative identity disorder. Twenty-three different identities, to be exact. One of Kevin’s dissociative personalities kidnaps three girls outside the mall and holds them hostage in a secret underground hideout. The film stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Betty Buckley.

12. Lucy (2014)

Scarlett Johannson plays an unknowing and unwilling drug mule who inadvertently absorbs some of the drugs she is transporting into her bloodstream. Scarlett Johannson’s titular character Lucy develops psychokinetic abilities with every bit of this unknown substance her body absorbs.
